1st digit=where vehicle was produced; country
2nd digit= make; H= Harley, G= General Motors, F= Ford, etc
10th digit=year; in 17 digit vin's is as follows:
A=1980, No I,O,Q,U ; where as J= 1988
as of 2001 the 10th digit is a number exactly corolating to the year...1 = 2001 thru 2009 then they will change again

Do you want to decipher what the vin means, or do a background check on what that particular bike has been through?
If it's the latter, do a web search for "motorcycle vin". Lots of sites come up. If it's the former, rephrase your question.

I recommend to to www.harleydavidson.com. Once there, go to services and look for checkup. You will find a location to put the VIN in and it will tell you a little about the bike.

It will mention any recalls and what year and model it is.

Try these;

They'll explain the information in the VIN itself.

If you're lookin' for more specific info., like who has owned it previously, etc... try a service like CarFax, you'll have to pay for this.
