As far as Europe knew, yes. The Vikings found it long before, but didn't tell anybody, and the Native Americans found it long enough before that to populate the continent. Christopher Columbus just happened to be the first of the bunch who knew a cartographer (map maker).

no, he was not the first person to land here, the vikings landed her in 1000 ce and columbus was here in about 1400 ce, however, the reaons columbus is often giving the credit is because the vikings didn't tell anybody about their discovery, a theory about this is because the vikings had been defeated by the indians who were already there, and the vikings didn't want to know that they could be defeated, so the people who were first here were really the indians

There is somespeculation that the Atlanteans did. At the very least, mongoloid persons from Asia crossed the Berring Straits and populated the "new world" approximately 12,000 years ago. Look up "Clovis culture" on your favorite search engine.

well, to the people who were in Asia, Africa and Europe, Columbus did discover America.. but there were Indians already there, so to them ... he didn't

no he was only one of many,nomads(indians) found america by crossing an ice bridge during the ice ages(russia to alaska..following herds(food),amerigo vespucci discovered america @ 14th or 15th century and the other answer of the vikings or norseman is also correct during @12th or 13th century
