Sometimes due to the higher risk involved with certain securities a broker will require a higher maintenance fee. For the most part the broker uses computer systems that "flag" securities that fit certain requirements. For example, when a stock falls below a certain price a flag may trigger. This may also occur with bizarre trading activity, or if certain news may be forthcoming and thus put certain stock at risk for more volatile trading. What your broker is saying about your stocks is that a greater risk has become associated with them and as such they want to make sure their hinds ends are covered in case "something bad" happens to your account and subsequently themselves. Let's say that your stock trade takes a nose dive and suddenly you no longer have the funds to cover your trade commitment. The broker would send you a margin call for more funds, but what if you just don't have them? Maybe you shorted stock and the trade went against you and now you have the obligation to buy back stock for a loss, but you don't have enough funds. You are SOL (sorry out of luck) true, but your broker has the obligation to cover your commitment if you can't. Given that, they take the necessary action to assure that they are covered if you have a misfortunate trade occurrence. They will assuredly protect themselves, and sometimes in the process of things they will even protect your interests as it may hurt them if they don't. In your case, they are making sure that you would have the maintenance funds available by increasing the maintenance requirments. Hope that helps. Good luck in your learning and trading.
