The tar baby is a character in one of the brer rabbit books...but I heard it mentioned today, as an ethnic slur. Has this become the generally understood meaning? When/why...

It's been offensive for a long time. I think at least since 1920's or 1930's.

The whole Brer Rabbit thing was an analogy of plantation life and slaves.

Simply put, the original stories of "Brer Rabbit" were created at a time when racism was much more overt. A "tar baby" was specifically in reference to blacks. Of course, nowadays, this is seen for what it is as a racist comment.

Always wondered that my self, I had to go to the UK to get my copy of song of the south but they have them on ebay now, imagine banning a whole movie because of on word....these people have too much power and take everything too seriously. It is almost as if banning something makes it like it never hapopened
