It depends on which culture and time period. Purple is the most common color associated with royalty. Mostly because it was a rather rare and expensive dye.
Imperial Rome used tyrian purple to designate rulers and even some of the next highest ranks.
Some European countries also had royal blue and/or purple.

Purple because it was hard to dye and yes, came from a shell.
"The shellfish were opened, and the glands were removed and crushed, producing a liquid that turned purple when exposed to the air. Because of its high cost, purple-dyed clothing was worn at first only by the wealthy and rulers."

For hundreds of years purple/violet was considered the color of royalty because it was so difficult and expensive to dye material this color and only the royalty could afford to have it done
