It wil be long distance for anyone outside of the area code your yahoo phone number is. Since Yahoo does not have phone numbers for Canada, only for US, UK and France, get one for the country you have the most friends in. Then all those in that country will at least only have to pay domestic charges, not international charges, providing they call you from a regular telephone.

If you are crossing over area codes then it would most likely be considered long distance. It can also be long distance within the same area code as well. What happens is that the phone company in your area establishes what it considers long distance to be. For example, when I was posted in Shilo Manitoba with the military I lived on Base. For us to phone about 200 meters to the west, to the small community just outside of the base, it was long distance. On the other hand, we could phone 50 kilometers the other direction and it wasn't long distance. The only problem was that 50 kilometers the other direction was training area with only about a dozen families living on rural roads just outside the base. The phone company eventually changed that so that we could phone 20 minutes to the west to Brandon and it wasn't long distance but it took a lot of lobbying by the base authorities. I believe, even within the same area code in Toronto, there are some calls from one part of the city to another where it is long distance depending upon how far away the call is going from the originator of the call. In your situation though, it would be long distance for sure.

Normally internet telephony does not cost anything apart from your regular internet expenses like service provider etc. You must be using a headset connected to your computer for listeneing and talking. If you are using a dial up connection, naturally your local telephone call will increase unless your service provider gives you free phoneline for the internet access number.

It depends what area code you get. If you get one that is local to them, no. If they call you from a PC account no. If they call an area code that is not local to them from a regular phone, yes.
