yeah it's safe giving that the projects were torn down back about 6-7 years ago and they're building quarter million dollar townhomes up and down the State Street corridor where the projects once sat. Along with building the main headquarters for the Chicago Police Department. Travel in a group do not travel alone if you are not familiar with the city. I always travel in a group and I've lived in Chicago all my life because as some of the posters said here there are questionable characters at night and do not give any change to the bums and homeless because most of them are mentally ill or have some kind of substance abuse problems and giving them money unknowingly you're supporting someone's drug and alcohol habit. Carry enough cash on you so you don't have to use the ATM and if you have any problems call 311 if it's a non emergency situation(make sure you know where you're at if they ask you for location). Stay on main streets and if someplace looks desolate and secluded don't go there because muggings happen when you're caught alone in a secluded neighborhood. Again travel in groups of two or more safety works better in numbers and when muggers see people traveling in groups of two or more you lessen the chances of a situation happening.

Pretty safe........I live on the 3600 block of East King Drive (about 4 blocks east of you). There is still rift-raft in the area, but with all the high-priced condo developments, restoration of historical brownstones and resturants popping up all over the place, the police makes it's presence known around there. They even have a headquarters that's a block long and a block wide on the 3500 block of South Michigan. That is about 1 block south of where you are staying and 1 block west. Just mind your own business and if you have to travel at night do it either with friends or by cab or car. Also, try to fit in, walk tall, muggers no matter where you are smell fear a mile away.

That's not too far from the Illinois Institute of Technology, so they have more cops than normal around the area. That said, still have to be careful. There are some questionable characters at night. Not a lot to do around there as far as nightlife goes (unless it's baseball season and the Sox are playing). But the transportation is pretty good (bus, el train) so if you go somewhere else, you might be able to get home easily. Just don't make yourself look like a "victim" (keeping your head down, curling up in a corner, walking around without paying attention to your surroundings. You don't have to walk around like a balled-up fist, but just be alert.
