Flash drives are highly portable, you can take them with you.
Flash drives are also "solid state", which means there are no moving parts involved making them less susceptible to hardware failures.
Do not expect to have high data transfer speeds though, If you need to backup a lot of data a flash drive is kind of slow, even if it´s a USB2 one...

i'll assume the FLASH DRIVE u mean here is those thumb drive thing. the actual meaning of flash drive simply means an external storage of type flash memory. all thumbdrives, memory cards and in quite alot of electronics uses this. benefits, well lemme list.

portable. u can bring it along anywhere thanks to its tiny size.

high operating temparature range.

perfect as a secondary storage when u consider size over capacity (compare this with cd & dvd)

almost immune from shock - drop it but it won't mess with ur data

almost immune from magnetic field - unlike magnetic storage device this can still retain data even if u put it on a magnet but this is strongly not recommended guess u won't want to take the chance.

compatible with any device, any OS platform, any machine, as long as they support it.

reading and writing data is not complicated. just drag and drop.

this is not the cheapest memory though if u consider the price of every gigabyte. dvd will be cheapest in this case. but if u put portability and capacity together, this has the highest score. portability here includes size, weight, damage caused from external factor like drop, moisture etc, things that will affect ur decision of taking it around with u.

this too is not the fastest but it definitely is faster than most of the storage solution. the fastest will always be magnetic storage like ur harddisk. the data rate will be unbeatable.

One of them is that you can take it with you everywhere you go. Another one is no battery is required. It uses the USB port to power its internal electronic parts.
