Why do people say we are going to war for oil, when oil prices(until recently) have been climbing steadily ? just curious.

Actually, oil prices have fallen substantially in the last month and gas prices are back down to the $2 range - about where they were when the war in Iraq started.

But, American involvement in the middle east isn't about keeping oil prices down or stable - it is about ensuring that the largest known oil reserves in the world are not controlled by anti-American dictators.

(Suppose there was a medicine that you needed to stay alive and suppose there was a decent stockpile of it, but it could no longer be produced. Would you rather have a friend or an enemy hold the stockpile of medicine and sell it to you?)

America uses 21,000,000 barrels of oil *a day*. This is beyond thirst and is more of an addiction. Given our need for oil, you can guarantee we'll send in the military anytime the supply is threatened.

True leadership would announce an Apollo-like policy to cut our dependence on oil by half in ten years. Care to guess what would happen to oil prices if America seriously went after this goal?

War raises the demand for oil, which is great for oil companies during a war to look for more oil. Drilling and distribution are at all time highs and they (oil companies) have made billions more than ever before.
