Just for clarification:

If you are an American, the answer is 'Grundschule'. (elementary school, primary education, grammar school)

If you are British, the answer is 'Gymnasium' (high school, secondary school, grammar school)

'Gymnasium' is the equivalent of high school (tho at a slightly higher level than a regular american high school for example), you go there until the age of 18, after which you complete your Abitur, which requires an exam (or combination of exams rather in various subjects) that gives you the right to attend a university.

The Germans don't have Grammar Schools like we used to have in England but it's equivalent was 'Das Gymnasium'. 'Gymnasium' education begins after year 4 of the Grundschule and lasts until year 13. However pupils can leave after year 10. Basically it prepares children for university.
