They show lots of ads in their search results and on other 3rd party websites. They don't have any on their home page, but the do in lots of other places.

Google has their adsence program with get them money as well as the website it is featured on, also Google is a publicly traded stock so people can invest their money into Google. Finally the majority of Googles websites are very barebones meaning they do not use a lot of bandwidth per page, making their monthly bandwidth statements lower than similar websites.
Also maybe the google page you are looking at doesnt have ads... but just think of the amount of peole who are using google at that time AND are seeing ads.

Dear, Go to gmail you can see lots of ads, go to any third party almost 70% of websites are with Google Adsense. So isnt it enough for them for that much publicity, its earning more beyond our imigination.

They also sell upgrades to their own products. Such a Google Earth has an upgrade that one has to pay for.
