I remember seeing lots of films when I was younger that made me think wow! that was great n I went and watched it again n again.
However I have noticed that this is happening less and less, are the films not as good, or am I expecting more or am I simply not as easily impressed?
Are modern films trying to make up for crappy storylines with special effects or are they just not as good as they used to be?

I have to say there are a lot of films out there today which have some seriously dodgy dialogue and plots!

I think with the advent of special effects some film makers are getting sloppy in the sense that with a few big bangs and people flying through the air that no one will realise that the script has the vocabulary content of a 10 year old's reading list and the plot has holes the size of a small continent.

Having said that very recently there have been some excellent films with great scripts, fantastic plots and great special effects.

They are still out there it's just that there are a lot more films being made and it's harder to find them amongst the dross.

No, I don't think they are as good. Once in a while, you'lll see one that's pretty good, but they are few and far between. There are a lot of remakes, but even the remake is not as good. Part of it is the total disregard for family audiences. Everything has to be "cheapened" or "dumbed down". I don't appreciate that myself. Why take a successful film and add new people, profanity and nudity? It was great the first time the way it was, why dirty it up and think it's better? I think you are right about the lousy story lines too, and don't you get tired of films that are part 1, part 2, part one a year from now on? That used to be called a series. One other thing that really worries me is that kids copy what they see. If you see promiscuity, drugs, nakedness, violence, immoral judgements, etc. what do you think the world is going to be like when they all grow up? That worries me for my grandkids sake.

The one good thing about modern films is that the acting is usually very good. Just watch some of the older films, especially the black and white ones and, apart from one or two good actors, the acting is really bad, very false and not natural at all. Now that you are older you are more critical because you have more experience to compare films, which is why you get disappointed. Just go to a movie with no expectations and you might find it more enjoyable.

Half and Half. Hollywood is just churning out multiple films of similar content, believe me, at the mo if you've seen one you've pretty much seen 'em all. There just isn't the product atm, believe me I work in the industry and see soooooooo many films each week it gets tedious.
There is also the fact that the older you get the less active your imagination usually becomes (there are some exceptions) and the harder you are to impress. It's quite a sad fact of life : (

There are good films around, and special effects don't rule, the directors have gone off them again. The car jumps in Dukes of Hazard are real cars doing real jumps. In Into The Blue the actors were doing most of the diving

I agree totally with you... hardly bother to go to the cinema nowadays. If they're not chick flicks (and I'm too old for them), they're 'coming of age' (ditto) or too darn violent for my taste. Recently won a competition, was rather disappointed to find that it was cinema tickets (I was after the ipod!) which had to be used within 10 days, and couldn't find anything that both me and my partner fancied. Ended up going to see 'The Blue Dahlia' (and if anyone can explain that plot, I'd be grateful).

I agree with another of the answers - too many remakes, and Hollywood seems to like pinching (and then changing for the worse) films from other countries.

You aren't as easily impressed, the plots suck when there is one and special effects are better but the storylines are non-existent.
Hollywood needs an enema.
