Pujols has a better OBP than Howard, which is a really important stat to the MLB big wigs, and he definately carried his team more and had less help, not to mention a .331 batting average while hitting power numbers. Pujols VORP is higher as well, which, at least mathematically, means he was more valuable to his team.
In the AL, I say you stil have to give it to Jeter, especially considering how well he did in the playoffs and did his best to carry the Yankees. And Ortiz is still just a DH and until he puts on a glove doesn't ever, EVER deserve to win MVP. Mauer and Morneau both deserve it more than Ortiz, as well, but Jeter has mostly better stats and, most importantly, 34 sb's to Mauer's 8, which means he was giving his team a chance to score more runs just based on his own individual performance. He had less K's in more at bats than Ortiz and a much higher average.

For the above poster, performance in the playoffs doesnt factor in because voting takes place before the playoffs begin. Pujols deserves it in the national league. Sure howard has more home runs, but OPS is the most indicative stat and pujols is higher. And my AL vote goes to Justin Morneau.

its tough for me to decide. My vote is torn 2 ways in the AL and 3 ways in the NL
You can say that some of them wont get it now because teams lost in the first round, but what many people dont know, is that these awards are voted for BEFORE the post-season starts, but they dont release the votes until the season is over:
American League:
Derek Jeter or Justin Morneau.
National League:
Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard or Jose Reyes
I dont need to break it down, I think the numbers really speak for themselves, its just who I think.

People don't seem to understand the the voting takes place prior to any playoff games. It is to determine the most valuable player during the regular season. NOT THE PLAYOFFS!!!
I still go with my original picks:
American League - Derek Jeter
National League - Ryan Howard
After reading some of these comments, not so much to this question but in general, it's clear that many people really don't understand the game.

I don't think Jeter is likely to get it now that the Yankees got swept. I agree that Pujols will probably get it, but I would like to see Jose Reyes get some consideration.

Ryan Howard and Justin Morneau.
However since the Phils didn't make the playoffs and the Twinkies are out of it, I'm sure this won't be the case.
