I'm not sure, but I think it's sort of like day-dreaming. I guess it's like letting yourself snooze while still being aware of somethings. I dunno... it's confusing. But you know, fish don't close their eyes--cause the can't--and yet they sleep in some dark shadows or something.

Try this: Focus at one point and try not to think, not to blink and not to talk--just breath. Relax your body and try not to close your eyes. Then, in about five minutes you're going to begin seeing images in front of you. You'd begin dreaming... you would of course see the same place you're looking at, but you wouldn't really focus on it... it'll sort of blur while your brain would create some images of a day-dream.

Don't know if my answer really answers your question... but well, I'll tell you one more thing. My mom told me once that she slept with her eyes open. Here's how she told it:

"I was like in 8th grade or something... I came to class still sleepy. We were having our teacher reading something for us while we hat to write it down in our notebooks. I was so tired I dozed off staring at the ceiling, however my hand still worked on righting what the teacher said. It felt so good... I was having such a nice dream when saddenly my neibor woke me up by looking in my notes and seeing 'GEEZ! Look at that, Sveta is ahead of me by like two sentences!' and that's when I woke up."

Dunno... but it was something like that. Anyway, I hope i helped.

Yes, anyone can learn how to sleep with their eyes open. However most people are not as well rested for a given period of sleep.

My son's eyes don't close entirely during sleep but he is sound asleep when this occurs. He has a short muscle in his eyes that prevents it from closing. It does cause trouble with dry eye but doesn't cause any trouble with his ability to sleep.
