Yes. I have come late to a movie before and bought a ticket and walked in when no one was there, but it had already started. I think they have to show it because of contractual requirements.

I worked at a movie theater as an usher and projectionist for 10 years and I would answer that question with it depends. If that particular movie was the longest running of the night and would keep us employees there later than we wanted then we would cancel it if no one showed up by the time it was supposed to start. Now, if the movie was a shorter running one, then we would play it just in case people showed up late. Now, if it was a particular movie that I or other employees decided we wanted to watch , then we would play it. I have had many jobs in my life but working at a movie theater was by far the best!! I am still close friends with at least 10 people I worked with through the years. The best were the late nights after closing, playing the movies we just got that night. (not to mention having a few beers!)

I worked as asst. manager & chief projectionist for a movie theatre for a number of years, & it all depended on the movie, what type of contract we had with the distributor, & whether the staff wanted to see the movie. Most times, if no one showed, or only two or three, we would refund the tickets & not show the film. In very rare instances, because of contractural obligations, we would be forced to screen it, so the staff would sit in the theatre & make comments, like "Rocky Horror".

Yes they do still show it, I worked in a theatre for a while myself and there would be empty theatres still playing. Especially in the morning.

consider a film as a rental object. it is rented by hour/day/week/month or whatever to be shown.
