They had many barriers. Language, employment, lack of money, discrimination...but they also had skills...were known to be excellent workers and talented in fields such as intricate woodwork and carpentry...and of course farming. Without family already established here to help out, life was very difficult. Living on the streets until employment was found, then normally living in overcrowded boarding houses to save money.

Each group faces severe problems. The poles are no exception to discrimination. Hard work and perserverance to assimilate and learn the language and ways of a new country made them achieve alot more than sticking to their own language and failure to blend in.
