General Conference is basically a big "meeting" where the General Authorities of the church speak to the church as a whole. It happens twice a year, once in October and once in April. Usually the Prophet, his counselors, and whomever the Prophet assigns speak. They give counsel, the prophet reveals any new temples to be built, church news, stuff like that, and speaks.
The passing of the bread and water is called the "sacrament" and it is during Sacrament meeting. Once a week we have the blessing of partaking the sacrament, thus renewing our baptismal covenants. There is more doctrine involved, but I won't go into it unless you want more info.
Check out LDS.org, it's a great site. There you can learn about our beliefs, what the church is doing and other things.
I can ASSURE you, we are Christians is every way possible. A Christian is a follower of Christ and we very much are.

Asking someone why their religion is "weird" is so rude I can not believe you said that to a friend.
In answer to your question every 6 months the LDS church has a General Conference. It is a meeting where the leaders of the church gives talks and information to the members and anyone that listens. It is called general because it is to the members as a whole and not just a small group. It is called a conference because it is a conference style meeting.
The guys passing bread and water around is called the sacrament. Many Christian churches have the sacrament. It is mentioned in the Bible.

General Conference is where the leaders get together and tell the church things. One example is the president a few years ago standing up and saying that the God of Mormonism is not the God of the Bible. That is truth in advertising and not often seen there!
The Bread and Water is their communion service. They don't remember the verse that without the shedding of blood is no remission of sin. I could get into this more, but I wont bother you with the pesky details.

Okay, Mormon speaking... :-)
General Conference is when the leaders of the LDS (or Mormon) church speak to the world -- members and non-members, pretty much anyone who wants to listen. They talk about the issues that our times face and give advice about important issues.
The "bread and water" thing is called the sacrament. It's a way to help repent of sins that you have commited throughout the week. The bread stands for the the flesh of Jesus and the water stands for the blood when he was crucified.
If you have any more questions, I'm sure your friend would love to answer them. :-)

General Conference is simply twice yearly meetings that happen on Saturday and Sunday. The LDS church leaders speak to their members and its broadcasted throughout the world.
The Sacrament is what you witnessed. Its like catholic communion and has basically the same meaning (mormons believe its a symbol of Christ's sacrifice, not literal like Catholics believe).

First off. "General Conference" is on Sunday.
The bread and water is sacrament. Like the catholics, but without the alcohol. And they symbolize the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Something about repentance and being forgiven by the eating of his flesh and drinking of his blood. It's in the bible, somewhere.
Some people think Mormons aren't Christian because they want to distance their own beliefs from the LDS church. But they believe Christ was the son of G*D and their savior.....and last I checked that's what makes you a Christian.

Open your eyes and read. It is called the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. Just like the title says. It is a church for Jesus Christ and we are living in what is called the latter days. Passing bread and water is common in many christian churches; it is called the sacrament; and you partake to acknowlege that you are aware that Christ died for your sins. You eat the bread in remembrance of his body and drink the water in remembrance of the blood he shed for you. Catholic church passes the sacrament also, and so do many other christian churches. Nothing weird about any of this if you look into it and realize the reason behind it.
