I have downloaded movies off of torrent, AVI and DIVX files. I wanted to know how I burn those to CDR, not DVDR, and have them play in a household DVD player?

VCD, like "Yoi_55" above mentioned.

However, some dvd players will also play avi's and/or divx. so check you dvd player's manual to see if it will support it. If so, just make sure the file will fit onto a cd, size wise, and then just burn it with your cd burning program as normal (data cd)

First of all check up with your home DVD player whether it can play or no? If you like to create a file which are right protected - you cannot copy it to CD-R or DVD-R.However you like to make a best DVD use the software like Sony Vegas DVD studio or Roxio easy CD creator no: 8

You need to create a VCD. Try VCD Easy:
