My 5 year old son, has bloody noses every few months or so, since he was about 2 years old. What causes this type of a bloody nose?

The inside of the nose is a very vascular surface. The ends of many tiny blood vessels end on the inside of the muccous membrane of the nose. When trauma occurs the ends of the vessels are ruptured and bleeding occurs. Other reasons that bleeding might occur are a sinus problem, drying, or other underlying health problems such as high blood pressure that you are not aware of. A simple visit to the pediatrician should clear your son's health and set your mind at ease. Carmex is a great moisturizer for right on the inside of the nares, if you have seen the doc already, and suspect it is drying that is causing the bleeding. Just make sure that you don't stick any object all the way up the nose. Apply it right around the inside of the nares with your pinky, or a q-tip and see if this doesn't help.

Some say a vitamin C deficiency can cause bloody noses. I used to get them during allergy season when I was a kid, especially when my family went on vacation and the climate/allergens changed.

My son had the same problem. We consulted with our pediatrician, and he said some kids have blood vessels closer to the surface of their skin and it makes them susceptible to nose bleeds, but they will out grow it.

My son is now 15 and its been years since he has had a nose bleed. So I guess the Doc was right.

I'm not a doctor but my son had the same problem and he did grow out of it but since then I've become aware that this can be simply a lack of Vitamin C.

Hope this is a bit useful.
