Personally, I'm afraid of this isolated country. I've little doubt the media is skewing some of the information.

Help me out to understand it -- and what do you think will happen?

This is a tricky situation. Although the people who are starving in North Korea are the general populace, the government as well as the 1.2 million man army is not.
The UN security council has agreed to sanctions but the country that can affect the greatest pain in sanctions is China and they are not willing to be a stern with their sanctions. If they would cut of gas and safe haven to the people of North Korea it would hurt enough that North Korea would back down but because North Korea is a buffer between the US military in South Korea and some of Russia and because they are also Communist they will not.
If the US attacks North Korea we will fight a war like we did previously. North Korea is full of mountains etc and a war there is cold and difficult and China may back North Korea with their troops as well.
North Korea did test nukes. This was verified by South Korea and the US military in South Korea.

Here's how I see it: N. Korea is the eighth country in the world to have nuclear capabilities. That kind of power in any ones hand is awesome but for NK to have it will be reason for everyone to walk lightly when negotiating with them. NK has been at peace talks with the South Korea since 1952 and have threatened many times to wipe them off the face of the earth in order to unify the country.

Although the only overt actions they have taken that the public is aware of is the Pueblo incident (they captured an American fishing troller that was really a spy ship)And the occasional border clash. They have never stopped their saber rattling which, after 50 years could mean they will probably not jump right in and toss a nuclear devise at anyone but, they are prone to selling stuff. That could be bad for all.

We need to continue negotiating until we have exhausted all avenues and then with much clarity and as sincere as we can. Tell Iran the North Korea hates them!

alot of talk will happen and thats it.. Here is the reason.....

Security council has proven to be non-exsistant because where america and brit agree china and russia do not agree. So with china and russia not agreeing to do sanctions one because they will make more money and 2 because no country is willing to go to war due to the fact that only america does all the work while everyone sits on there bum sure we get help every once in a while but when we do help we send a huge majority more then the others take a look at iraq you may have some canadians
you may have some russians
some is key word its so pathetic and cowardly.

So russia will do alot of bs talking we want them to hault
so will china

but the fact is until china and russia join us on this its a mute point because america is pre-occupied which indeed is what was wanted by north korea and iran because they new china and others didnt have the nut sack to go to war

A strongly worded resolution from the UN in about a month. Then a horribly botched, Chernobyl-like nuclear test from North Korea sometime in the next 2 years, setting back their nuclear ambitions by decades, and possibly destabilizing the entire North Korean regime. Or a total failure to perform any more successful tests, causing the country to withdraw even more and shut the hell up for a while.

The U.S. has made every effort to isolate this country. We refuse to speak to them directly. N.K. is run by a dictator and the country is in very bad economic condition.
President Bush named them as part of the axis of evil -- before 9/11. They fear that we will strike them like Iraq, Afganistan -- as by the way do Iran and Syria. So North Korea publicly went ahead with their nuke program -- and so, I suspect will Iran. These countries aim to protect themselves and position themselves on the world stage. N.K. unlike Iran has no $ --

What you will now see, IMO, is diplomacy -- with both Iran and N.K.. It's time to send in the suits, not the troops or the bombs. Afterall, what can anyone think about our current fortunes thru air strikes and war. It is time for this great country, the U.S.A., to be a great player on the world stage. Minds, not mines.

I am a little freaked by it too. Hopefully we wont see an arms race between korea, japan and china. it will probably amount to huge econ sanctions and become the cuba of the 2000's.

who knows. They keep talkin about sanctions but North Korea is already isolated itself from everyone so what good would more sanctions do?

There is no question now about the Strategic Defense Initiative (or Star-wars Defense System), we need it now.
