When I have been picked for 'best answer" I have tried to say thanks either by email or using the link provided on the original question page where it shows who the person picked...if it was you there is a link for additional comments..I never do it if it was a "voted best answer" .....only if the "asker" picked it.
I wouldn't like someone just giving me a thumbs up as a thank you because like you said it looks insencere and it is a bit biased.
I would rather it be a thumbs up for it's own merit rather than someones way of being nice.
Just my humble opinion though, others might like it the other way.

Hmm .. How rude of me, I guess I have never said thanks to anyone or do I require any thanks from someone else... What I do do is a Remember there names and I guess I care a little more when I see them post a question. I make sure I answer it... Also I have made some friends on my 360 page.... I'm more personable with them.

add a comment and express yourself..tell them how much gratitude you feel towards their gesture..i think that is enough for them to feel special with your enthusiasm. or if they accept e-mail, write them a thank you note, then hoping it will start a beautiful friendship among you two....

If you notice, at the end where your answer is chosen by the asker as best, there is a little blue word...
