A dirt bike can get through places a quad can't so it's better if you're going to be riding narrow trails and you can toss a dirtbike in a pickup by yourself, whereas most quads are too big to fit in a pickup, so it would need a trailer.
I don't know if you have a giant place to store your vehicle or anything, but dirtbikes can definately save space in the garage.... so you could get two ;)
Quads are very expensive and kinda cumbersome. I don't think they're worth the money, but they are fun.
My vote is for getting a dirtbike.... versitile, affordable, compact and manuverable.

Both are really fun. It really all depends on you, your experience in riding, and what you are wanting to do. Both of them have their ups and down sides to them. I have raced motor cross and if it were my choice I would go with a dirt bike. There are so many places you can get with a dirt bike and the freedom you have on a dirt bike is just a rush in its self, being able to cut your own path and trails. But a four wheeler is good as well, 4 wheels on the ground instead of 2. It is a little safer for the beginning rider. You can push your self on a 4 wheeler a little more and feel a bite more security then you can on a dirt bike. Dirt bikes can get away from you really fast until you acquirer the skills of riding and handling the bike. But if you are wanting in to riding it doesn't matter what you choose because they are both great fun and a rush that you cant shake off. Good luck in your rides to come.

I own and love riding both dirt bikes and quads, but I always recommend beginners start on two wheels before they try four. The main reason is that on a dirt bike you'll crash a bunch while you're learning, but it'll be at slow speeds and it's rare to hurt yourself or your bike. On a four wheeler you won't crash, you'll get overconfident, and then you'll be going fast when you do something epically stupid. These wrecks usually hurt the rider and the machine. The second reason I recommend two wheels instead of four is that dirt bikes are much easier to work on and usually cheaper to fix. Third reason is you learn a ton more skills riding dirt bikes than you do ATV's.

I really wanted a quad but decided that I probably wouldn't get as much use out of something that was strictly off-road. Instead I got a dual sport motorcycle (Kawasaki KLR650) so that I could ride on the street legally and take it offroad. I've had a great time with it!
