There is no need to feel bad because you have a better job. That is what we all work for. You have to look out for your self in this old world because no one else is going to do it. Just tell your boss that you have found a better paying job and that you will work a weeks notice or what ever. If he gets mad tough, you can just leave then and go on your way. I would think that he can understand that you have to make a life for yourself, and you have to do what is right for you. After all if he found a better job he would not hesitate to quit.

Whatever you do, don't do what Audrey H just said. One always needs a good reference. You don't know how this new job will play out, so don't burn bridges. Also, you value your boss as a good friend. Hopefully, your boss values you as a friend as well and will want the best for you.

Talking face to face with a letter is the best way. Also, two weeks notice is standard business ethics.

Be prepared that your boss will be upset, especially if you haven't made your looking for a new job public knowledge.

Good luck.

You just have to tell him....in person and with a letter of resignation in your hand so he knows that this is serious....please, oh please, provide him with some decent notice so he can replace you...these days everyone IS resplacable, but sometimes it takes longer than you would expect...If there is not a lot of growth where you are, he will surely realize that you are the type of person to be counted on, and growth is in your future...after all, he had the priviledge of working with you for 4 years.....He may be upset, disappointed, but will realize when he settles in with someone else that it was for the good that you left and that he is also doing fine...he will forgive and be in touch.....

If you truly want out of there, give him a two week notice in writing and that's that.

He will a) accept it as is, or b) counter offer by meeting your pay etc. Now you'd be in a position to make a decision to stay or go.

Either way don't burn bridges with him.
