Just like the Duke of Wellington - Nelson defeated Napoleon's forces. Napoleon was in control of a large part of Europe and was a significant threat to Britain.
He was such a threat that the gave use TWO of our national heroes. Wellington beat Napoleon on land at Waterloo. Nelson beat Napoleon at sea near the port of Trafalgar. Hence the Trafalgar square for Nelson's column

He's a great figure to do homework reasearch about. When you write, mention Lady Hamilton, Battle of the Nile, a barrel of brandy and Cadiz, and you'll be getting somewhere. Do a bit of work connecting those subjects with Nelson and you'll learn summat!
