I know of no student--including myself--who ever liked homework.

When I was in junior high, I had a math teacher who never called the assignments "homework;" he referred to it as SRW, "Self Reliance Work." The difference isn't just semantic; the purpose is to help teachers assess how the students are able to apply what they are learning in the classroom in a more or less independent setting.

Much later, when I was in college and learning to teach, I took to heart the notion that homework should never be used as a punishment; in fact, there were two nights in the week when I would not assign homework and those nights were Wednesdays (in my part of the country a lot of families attend church services on Wednesday evenings) and Fridays (I feel that students need time to just be kids, and the weekends are sometimes the only non-structured time some of them have).

Another lesson I took to heart was that the assignments I gave for homework should be able to be completed in no more than fifteen minutes. Since I was a secondary school teacher, I realized that I was not the only person giving the students assignments, and I didn't think people should have to burn the midnight oil just to get homework completed--four or five hours a night worth of assignments is, to me, too much--I think it should be a two hour maximum, to provide a little down time and for getting to bed at a decent hour.

So, why homework? I saw it as being a diagnostic tool and a way to get students to work independently.

For the most part doing homework is to improve your skills at a desk. This precludes the fact that most work in the workplace is done at a desk. In reality it teaches you the discipline to formulate plans that are boring and tedious(just like work), yet gives you the satisfaction that you find and have found other faster ways to complete the assignments given to you. Not only in school but in a regular job. Keep at it, because unless you inherit millions of dollars(and even then)you will invariably be chained to a desk for the rest of your life.

Interestingly enough, I'm doing homework while doing Yahoo! Answers, I think it's to review and enforce the ideas from school, I think the concept is necessary but overloading is becoming too frequent, we have seven classes so 3 hours of homework for each class is not tolerable, I'm swamped, and I make A's and do my research so to those out htere with the students these days are lazy...stereotype, we're not

I comprehended much better at home, doing homework, when I was still in school. If you did not have homework you might be in school until you're 25 years old. Now you wouldn't want that, right? Now get busy...

Teachers are REQUIRED to give you homework because they want the students to learn at home the subject. If you don't master the subject by the time the semester or school year ends, then you didn't really learn the subject. There are some subjects that I didn't master because it was a TOUGH subject, but I don't use those subjects in the "real" world.

Because to torture us, I guess... (?!) I don't know >shrugs<
Maybe teachers want to find out how well you understood the lesson taught in class --> whether you paid attention=P
Another would be to help you to develop a better understanding of the lesson learned through homework & practise.

Because some day, you'll be moving out of mom and dad's. And you'll have to earn your own money in order to live. Next time you see a 30 year old working the cash register at MacDonald's, ask them if they like their job. That's why you got to go to school and do your best while you're there.

The teachers want to make sure your learning everything. It gives them knowledge on how to adjust in case some of the students in your class are having trouble with something. It's also just like practicing.
