I would suggest using febreeze scented fabric softner and/or dryer sheets. Also make sure that your towels are completely dry when putting them away.
I find that keeping your towel in the hall closet helps as well, when you shower the bathroom gets all steamed and the moisture is falling onto the towels and thats where the smell comes in from.
I also put a dryer sheet unused in the closet with the towels to keep them smelling dryer fresh.

Hope that helps

the musky smell is probably from mold or mildew. Does the towel not smell before it gets wet? If the water smells it may be something your water needs treated for. I would suggest making sure the towels are 100% dry before use and you may have a mold or mildew problem to look into.

This used to happen to me too.
If the towels are colored and cannot be bleached, put a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle, then re-wash and use downey in the rinse cycle.
If this doesn't work, it's time to go shopping for new towels.
I think the original cause of this happening is the towels are staying wet too long before they're getting washed. So hang them to dry first before just throwing them into the hamper.
Good Luck.

I had the same problem with my towels awhile back. Come to find out, it was the rubber seal/boot on my Maytag Neptune front loader. It didn't have a proper drain hole to let the water out, therefore the standing water would grow mold and mildew. We started leaving ther door cracked a bit to dry it out when not in use and that helped. Switching to low suds HE detergent (high efficiency) did the trick. You can also run a cycle with bleach to kill the mold and mildew, and/ or pour baking soda in the wash. Make sure you don't leave the clothes in the washer for along time wet, especially when it's hot outside, they can sour in a day. Good luck

I use Clorox 2 powder bleach for colors just to sure. I use gain powder soap, & downey lavendar/vanilla dryer sheets. I think that the Clorox helps deep clean & towels & keeps them fresh longer even after use. Also, be sure to hang your used towel up so it can dry. Hope this helps you out......

You can hang them in the sun, The sun will kill all the bacteria in the towels and make them smell so fresh.....After hanging them in the sun for a full day bring them in and wash and dry....They do not have to be washed before you hang them out to air all day in the sun....
Alot of ppl like to hang them out to dry after they have washed them then fold them , but it makes them ruff feeling..I have heard that if you hang them out on a very windy day they will be soft and not stiff.....
One sunny day and your towels will smell fresh and clean.....LOVE THE SMELL

They make detergents with febreeze now, also liqued fabric softeners instead of the dryer sheets. Wash in hot water and dry completely.

I use a NASA-technology cold-water-only laundry system that was designed for the space shuttle. It's called "LaundryPure," and can be purchased through a company called EcoQuest. I've never been more pleased with a new product than I am with this one.

Try washing your laundry with amonia in it. I've found that it cleans much better adding into the wash than detergent alone.
