Has metallica put out anything worth listening to post the black album? I think Black was ok but It is the end of great metal from them.

Definitely PRE. Before producer Bob Rock got involved (and well before the band went into therapy), Metallica were a groundbreaking band with a distinctive sound and image. They wrote epic songs with clearly defined, effective riffs puncutated by Cliff Burton's melodic, often understated bass and Lars Ulrich's off-kilter, almost improvisational drumming. (Lars played that way because he didn't really know how to do "standard" rock drumming -- a good thing!).

With the Black album, Metallica openly made a choice to play more conventional rock songs. They dumbed-down their songwriting, over-produced their sound (thanks to the aforementioned Bob Rock) and, perhaps worst of all, Lars started playing like a normal rock drummer -- that is, BORINGLY.

In the years after, Metallica basically turned into a yawn-inducing grunge band with fancy haircuts and facial hair and fashionable clothes. James Hetfield's once-brillant riffs have fizzled into buzzy, clunky hard-to-pin-down chord changes that Alice in Chains would have rejected.

S'more random thoughts:

"Ride the Lightning" is a brillant album marred by one substandard song ("Escape").

"Master of Puppets" is a perfect album that stands alongside Black Sabbath's best.

"And Justice for All" has some great riffs and songwriting but is ruined by absolutely God-awful production, mostly because of the band's decision to "haze" Jason Newstead by leaving him out of the mix.

"Garage Days Re-Revisited" is a great, raw punk/metal album on which Jason finally gets his due.

Every album thereafter chronicles what happens when a band loses its edge and its muse, giving in to mediocrity and 12-step programs.

I like pre Black Album Metallica, more than post Black anyway.

I think before the Black album, everything rocked! But Metallica has went and became something other than what they were, I mean the older stuff never seems to get boring, but the newer music that they have put out over the past few years I can't even stand to listen to anymore. PLEASE METALLICA COME BACK! COME BACK! AND BRING JASON NEWSTED WITH YOU!!!!!!

Metallica sold out .. I started to listen to the in 84 . Honestly I thought their demise started with Justice , but that is my opinion . What I think they should do is get back with Dave Mustane and pump him full of heroine , the rest need to start partying again also . Only then will Metallica be good again ... So you know this will never happen.

Actually, I didn't think Load was that bad of an album...at least compared to Reload...St. Anger sounds like an attempt to recapture something, and it is certainly better than anything since the Black Album....but this is really a no-brainer question.

I think the last real creative outlook on music from metallica was And Justice for All. lyrics and musically it was great.. sometime after this i think the big labels put presser on the artists to come out with something fast. so its not as good as something that has had the time to evolve.....

I agree 100%.

I do like St Anger, but only if I pretend it's not Metallica. I think that after Black they should have changed their name to reflect their change in style.
