You don't need to "propose" in the classical sense. Bring up the subject, not indirectly, but something like: "We've been going out for "n" number of months/years and I'd be ready to offer more of a commitment in our relationship....how do you feel about it?" This could bring the topic in the open. I know many couples (husband/wife) who didn't propose in the classical sense, and they are in healthy relationships with each other. If you propose, or if he proposes, it is forced in a way. I, once I'll propose, I'm sure it's not going to be a shock to my g/f. I know it's less romantic, but we'll need more than romance to go through life.

No, it wouldn't be wrong at all :) My fiance proposed to me but I then bought him a white gold band and had it engraved and gave it to him in a romantic way...he loves it!
