I'm a fashion nerd. I have NO idea what to buy her to wear. She keeps picking out prom-style, floor-length dresses. I thought a "street" length would be more appropriate. What kind of dress is worn to a "semi-formal" dance? Is a normal "sunday's best" appropriate for this function?

My daughter (17) says if she is in the homecoming court, then the prom-type dresses are appropriate. If she isn't then a nice, regular, but slightly fancy or Sunday best dress is better for the dance. She says at her school, even the girls in the homecoming court change into something less fancy & more comfortable when they go to the dance.

Hope this helps!

whatever you do don't buy a dress that has glitter on it all of the glitter will get everywhere and they are just ugly and trashy. Also don't get it at a store that all the other girls are getting theirs because most likely someone else will be wearing it. Show your daughter that you know what are you are talking about so she isn’t so insecure remember she is in jr. high...hehehe All she really need is a cute simple black dress or one simple color that isn't bright just flattering on her maybe knee length( it will be cool out side im sure) and is not prom so don't go any longer. ACCESSORIES... are the biggest thing right now (remember NO bling bling..so 2 years ago.) and then you wont feel like you wasted all that money because she will be able to wear her accessories again to school!!!!And teach your daughter how to dress with class.... show her some Audrey Hepburn movies or photos and compare them with the pics. in the magazines!!! Think stores like Nordstrom's...the B.P. section will have some great items for you at a great price!!!!

Not a Sunday best dress for sure... it's not formal enough.
Semi-formal usually means a knee to tea length (mid calf) party dress. The knee length strapless ones with really poofy skirts are a good example.
Basically a short prom dress.

Semi formal just means no prom like ball gowns. Guys wear suits or a long sleeve shirt with a tie, not tuxes. She can wear something floor length but I would just pick out something really more like a cocktail type dress. That way it's easier to dance in since it's knee length.

More than Sunday's best, but not floor length.
My daughter is going and she is wearing a knee length, spaghetti strap black satin dress with a pink belt with rhinestones on it.
It is not formal which would be floor length, opera style -kinda-
It's in between Sunday best and formal. She would be under dressed in Sunday best.Get a YW or seventeen magazine and look at semi formal dresses or type it in and look on line

have her wear a knee length dress. thats what everyone told me. im going to my homecoming dance nov4th. the only dress code i know of is nothing trashy. Your a mom so thankfully you wont allow that. and you have to dress up. save the prom dresses for the prom. take her to a store and tell her to pick out a knee length dress and you approve. let her have fun with it and dont cry. She will look absolutly stunning. my mom cried. anyways tell her i hope she has fun

I don't think she should wear anything fancy sancy. I mean, I just graduated from High school and I'm in college and when we go to homecoming dances, girls would wear semi long dresses or short dresses but they don't wear any too elegant or fancy dresses. Black can be ok but a lot of ppl wear black so try to stay away from that color.

when I had my semi I wore a black and blue knee length dress with ruffles in the bottom. make sure its not long! thats too fancy and those dresses are for prom. get her a pretty knee length dress and some cute shoes. she'll be the bell of the ball =]]

Eh. When I was in school, I wore long dresses. See, formal is when you go all out and dress yourself up to get laid. (You probably don't want to think about your daughter getting laid, its just an expression to looking HOTT HOTT HOTT)
SEMI-FORMAL is more of the...skirty, flirty, not so extravagant dresses that you'd see at the prom. Look for something that's really cute, flirty, shortish, and bright colors.
Hope I helped.

I advisew that she wear an elegant dress. Try not to wear black or white, that is boring. Wear some orange maybe, try to stick with the basic fall colors. As a parent you may not want to hear this but wear a dress that goes 5 inches past the knees and just a little low cut. No clevage please i find it to be wierd.
