January travel is high season so it's not really going to be a cheap ticket. Advance purchase will allow you to get a better price over waiting. The closer in the date the ticket will only get more expensive.
I don't know what city you are out of as far as if it is only scheduled air or charters.

Either Puerto Plata, Punta Cana or Santo Domingo, they're the 3 main tourist airports
