Some of them manage to successfully advocate for issues that are otherwise neglected by politicians. For instance, a group like Mothers Against Drunk Driving may succeed in singlehandedly bringing about the toughening of DUI laws. Conversely, a group representing tobacco interests can succeed in bribing politicians into helping them misrepresent the health risks of smoking to the public. It goes both ways.

Policies get pushed through congress that interest a certain population or group of individuals that normally would not be talked about in the govt.

Everyone complains about interest groups, but we ALL benefit from them. There are interest groups that get funding and policy for autism research, which benefits my son. In a small way or a big way, every single American has benefitted from an interest group.

Well, if you're a union member, you get to take money from everybody who works for that company and give it to the Democrats regardless of your personal views of the candidate. At least the money is unified?

If you're African-American, you get lumped into one large category, ironicly called the "Black vote", and assumed to vote with Democrats- again ironic because Dr Martin Luther King didnt believe in segregation. Did I miss something?

If you're rich, you get to choose which party you want to become part of based on how blatant you want to be with your money: subtle rich people tend to lean Republican who may donate to private charities as a tax write-off with undisclosed money while the ostensibly rich people tend to be Democrats who do fund raisers for charities and charge for the appearance instead of use their own money. Is there a difference?

If you're middle-class, you will either be thrust into being rich accidently with a tax break from Republicans or struck poor because of a tax on the "rich" that the rich could avoid but you dont make enough money to.

If you're homosexual, you can join the military- you just cant tell anyone. You just arent allowed to be Republican or the Democrats will blackmail you.

If you're a pedophile, you get your picture, name, and home address posted on the internet free of charge.

If you're a Native American, you get to live on a reservation which is a nice pris- er, uh, area that has been designated for you and you dont have to pay taxes. You dont have to live there- but they have casinos.

If you're an illegal alien, you get to choose from the identities of millions of legal Americans, steal it, get a job with it, and made a citizen years sooner than legal immigrants with less than half the hasstle- what a bargain!

If you're poor, you get to vote multiple times for a Democrat without ever having to send in the ballot yourself or ever signing it...hell, you dont even have to be alive.

There's a whole lot more I havent listed. Maybe I will continue this later, but that's enough of a laugh for now...oh, you werent laughing?

Because then certain groups who would not have a voice can be heard (such as cancer prevention groups), or the public can be made aware of a dangerous group of people who are active and trying to solicit taxpayers funds (such as groups that promote ethnic predjudice).

They bring the viewpoint of their constituents to the representatives. Unfortunetly they also provide special favors to those same people and those people think their vote is for sale.

Its an even bigger losing battle than gun control. Easier to hide bullets or even buy them on black markets cause they are so darn small and easy to conseal.
