Well, humans, being mammals, make milk too, and they would have seen cows feeding their young, so it's not that strange.
Several thousand years ago they began to domesticate cows and sheep and things, so they'd have a reliable food source. I'm sure it was about then someone realised that they could use the milk the cows suckled their young with.

Cute question.
But have you ever milked a cow?
It is not as easy as it looks.
Cows like other animals, trust only one or a few people at any given time in their lives.
They don't give that milk to just anyone.
That is why the cliche was born, "men do not buy the cow when the milk is free."

Don't you think ancient people were clever enough to see the similarities between their own and animal mammaries? As well as catching whole herds of animals with both cows and calves, they also butchered everything themselves. And I think they actually started with a bit smaller animals like goats...

His/her name has been lost in time. Isuspect someone very hungry saw a calf drinking and decided to investigate. Cows and goats weren't nice and stupid like now, though, so it took a lot of guts to do it.

Probably from some people who couldn't breastfeed their baby, and thought, well, at least somebody's got milk!
