Juxtaposition is putting something next to something else. In literary terms, this generally means putting two words or ideas next to each other to create an effect. The words might be contradictory, contrasting, or might have a shocking effect when placed side by side. The purposes of this tool depend on what the author wants to achieve by using it. You might like to look at poetry to find some examples of juxtaposition, as it's a good way of making a point, or having an effect on the reader, whilst not using prosaic language. Things to look out for in poetry which might be juxtaposed are imagery and descriptive language. Things to think about when you've found some examples are: what effect does this have on the reader (me or others who might be reading it) and why does the writer want to use this effect? By putting it in context with the whole piece of writing (novel, poem, play), you'll be able to best judge why the writer has used juxtaposition.
