For You
~ Summer Bates
Written with a pen, sealed with a kiss
If you love me please answer this
Do you love me, or do you not?
You told me once but I forgot
So tell me now and tell me true
So I can tell you I love you
Of all the guys I've ever met
You are the one I won't forget
And if I die before you do
I'll go to heaven and wait for you
If you're not there on Judgement Day
I'll know you went the other way
I'll give the angels back their wings
And risk the loss of everything
Just to prove my love for you
I'll go to hell to be with you

I Think There Are Many Versions To This Poem , 1981 I Had Moved To An Apartment Away From Home, My Caretaker Said He Wrote This Poem To His Late Wife In The 1950's, At The Time I Met Him He Had Remarried & Now He & His 2nd Wife Has Since Past Away

Do you love me or do you not, you told me once but I forgot. I do believe that god above created you for me to love, he picked you out from all the rest because he knew I'd love you best. If I should die and your not there I'll wait for you on Heaven's stairs. Then all the angels can peek and see what you my darlin mean to me, if your not there on Judgement Day I'll know you have gone the other way. I'll give the angels back their wings, golden harps, and other things. So just to prove my love is true, I'd go to hell to be with you!!!!!!!

To be technical, this is more a "prose dreamscape" than a poem. It is prose, broken up into variable length lines. Poetry is much more than line breaks and punctuation. Also, typos and lost words hurt any written form of communication, but they destroy a dreamscape. What you could do is make this into a very interesting short story ... perhaps you come back from your father's funeral. You sit in his old living room, the little trinkets there speak to you about this timeline of experience.

To prove to you my love is true (written in 1982 in San Antonio Texas but to freshmen at John Jay High School)
I had a heart and it was true
but now its gone from me to you
so care for it as I have done
for you have two and I have none
if I get to heaven and you re not there
I ll wait for you by the golden stairs
if you re not there by judgement day
I ll know you ve gone the other way
I ll give the angels back their wings,
their harp of gold and everything
To prove to you my love is true
I would go to hell to be with you
