I just purchased a 1980 KZ440 LTD for my son. This bike will crank in all gears. If by mistake its left in gear and you hit the starter button, its coming off the kickstand. Does this bike have a saftey switch and where is it or how can I check it.

It does have a neutral safety switch (starter lockout switch). It's at the clutch lever. The switch is probably stuck in the on position. Disconnect that switch. The starter shouldn't work with that switch unplugged.

As suggested, it may be an electric powered situation, or it can be a compression situation. Do a cranking compression try on each cylinder. you've got a minimum of one hundred twenty psi (in all probability bigger, i've got not got a handbook on the KZ), and all cylinders could study interior of 10 psi of another. in case you have one cylinder reading low, or all of them reading under one hundred psi, then it fairly is time for boring and new pistons. If the compression try is solid, then attempt setting up new spark plugs. Take the motorbike for a holiday, and whilst it dies, eliminate one plug (flow away your gloves on), and verify for spark. Do an analogous to all the plugs. If it incredibly is ignition, you will see one or all plugs without spark. those are the two maximum in all probability motives, yet there are a number of others - you will could desire to do those 2 exams to slender it down. desire this helps.

Pull in the clutch before you start it. Put it in neutral before starting it. This will solve the problem. My bike will not start with the kickstand down, except in neutral.
