I just saw the advertisement for it today. "Black Movie Awards" !! I cannot believe how this can be? First of all , how come they can call themselves Black , when they want the rest of us to call them "african americans" and if they truly want the world to be "color blind", how can they justify this. AND I wonder how much outcry there wouldl be if there was a "WHITE MOVIE AWARDS"
The same is true, for The United ***** College Fund, Black history month, Ebony magazine , etc. NONE of these things could be done by whites. Its such a double standard and I am sick of their racism!!!! Where is the outcry!!!???

I don't care what anyone here says, IF someone came out with a magazine, or tv shows that excluded all people of color, there would be a problem. If black people want to be awarded , it should be for the work they did, NOT because of their color.

I read an article where Morgan Freeman said that he thought that The Black Movie Awards were rediculous and that he would have no part in them. He actually said that if there were a "White Movie Awards" then the whole country would go into riots! How we we start with our outcry, though? They would just throw more race cards at us and turn it back into reverse racism. The "Black Movie Awards" should be banned as a racist thing. Whites should (at least) secretively boy-cot this. It would be a good thing to get this outcry out there on the net.

Well there is a white movie awards. It's called the Oscars. Look at the winners' lists and try to find the black actors. How many black directors can you name?

Flip through a fashion magazine or twelve. Do you see many pictures of black women or men? How would the clothes look against dark skin? How about the make-up and hair tips? The 'minority' models are tokens, the articles are directed to white women.

When I was in school, there was no mention of anyone black, except for slavery, the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman. All three got half a page and maybe two minutes in class. As a white kid in the suburb of Detroit, I learned the rest from Black History Month psa's on the television. That was in the 1970s. Not exactly ancient history.

And the UNCF? Did it ever occur to your narrow little mind that there is a need for additional monies for black students?

The history of the terms "Black" and "African-American" is far too long to go into here, especially since there's never been a concensus about either one. In the 1970s, "Black" was very much about "Black Pride," reclaiming a word that had been used as an insult and turning it into a word of pride. The Black Movie Awards are about a sub-culture standing up and saying that they are proud of what they've accomplished, and often against incredible odds.

Why can't you let them have that much? You and yours have all the rest.

Are you really that upset about if? If you are, I guess you can see how many blacks must have felt in the 1900's when they were deliberately kept out of and denied many aspects of American society. It doesn't feel good, huh?

What you should always remember is this: It is okay to do things separately. What is not okay is to deny an American of their basic rights. For instance, blacks were denied an equal education. Separation would have been fine had it been equal.

The idea of a melting pot is a myth. We have different cultures and heritages. If white people want to get together and have a white celebration that does NOT involve hatred, great! Everyone should be able to celebrate their culture, even white people.

Hold on a minute! It's about time that African American actors get their due. At the first Academy Awards, not one African American entertainer was there to be honored. In fact I bet the only ones that were there of African/ American descent were the kitchen and wait staff. You have pioneers in the entertainment industry not only for African Americans but for all the world to enjoy like Hattie McDaniels,Ossie Davis,James Earl Jones,Cicely Tyson, Alfre Woodard or Sidney Poitier. African /Americans were always in roles of servants or extras
Oh by the way, you don't have to African/American to get help from United ***** College Fund, lol.

What bullsh*t! I guess you must have been under a rock in American history class. Black people began to be treated like true Americans in the 1960's (not to long ago). Until the 1960's we weren't allowed to eat by white people, go to the same public places as white people, we weren't even allowed to vote. We endured 400 years of this mistreatment, now that we finally get the recognition that we deserve, you want to b*tch and moan about it! All I can say is: "GET USE TO IT!" Karma is b*tch! (Where was the f*cking outcry during those 400 years?)

First of all, most of the tv shown on tv right now are exclusive of people of color (not just black but all minorities). Secondly, it is not racism. It just a celebration of Black cimena. It a celebration of culture. Are you saying we shouldnt celebrate our own culture? It is not an exclusive act or event. Some of the best films of color were directed by Whites. A Soldiers Story (Normany Jewison), The Color Purple (Stephen Spielberg), Glory (Edward Zwick).

Are you saying we shouldnt celebrate our own culture? The are other organization who promote and celebrate Italian-American Cinema, Hispanic Cinema, Jewish Cinema, British Cinema, etc. Should we cry foul when these organization celebrate their rich culture in movies. No. But you want to flip this into a Black and White thing and what you need to understand is that these moves are about tradition, about culture, history, educatin, pain , joy triumph. And not just Black movies, but all cinema.

But more to the point, Blacks don't own many tv studios, film studios, etc. so who is left to tell or celebrate these stories? Are you saying these stories should be told? This is America right? The great melting pot?

Don't reject Black cinema, celebrate all cinema in all its forms.

there is little outcry
because there isn't anything wrong

"they" do not want "the world to be 'color blind'"
"they" (and every decent person) wants justice & equality

it anyone has an interest in creating something like this--or any other artistic project (or other project)
and is fortunate enough to get the financial and emotional backing to pursue it...
good for them!
and good for the rest of us! because it's an example to inspire our own dreams and goals

go ahead and create a "white movie award", "white history", "white magazine"....
if you do it with correct motivation
they will be "successful" and you'll be happy

try to see that a black movie "category"
is just a means to compartmentalize
one genre from another

don't be hate'n

And apparently, You don't have to be American any more either, you can get funded in Canada, England and France, if you know where to apply

Because they can. Blame black peoples confusion of what they want to be called on slavery and 400 years of oppresion. So white folks...cry me a river, build a bridge, and then get over it.
