Resistors are measured in ohms, with a multimeter or ohmmeter. They are also rated by wattage, (how much power they can dissipate safely).
Multimeters are rather inexpensive - available at Radio Shack for under $20.

A resistor is measured with a multimeter, in ohms as it has been said in other questions. However, resistors have a code of colours, they have stripes of colours painted on them so you can easily identify them:
0 - black
1 - brown
2 - red
3 - orange
4 - yellow
5 - green
6 - blue
7 - purple
8 - grey
9 - white
usually the last line is used as a mulplier for instance an orange, orange, red resistor means it's 330 ohms

They are measured in 'ohms', which uses the Greek Omega for the symbol (like an upside-down horseshow with little feet.)
