I'm a 22 year old woman and I was diagnosed a year ago with endometriosis. I have severe pain before and during my periods, sex is sometimes intollerable, and going to the bathroom hurts as well. I know that surgeries can be done to help with these symptoms, but my sister in law went through the same surgery and now that she and my brother are trying to concieve they're finding it VERY difficult. My boyfriend of 3 years and I are planning on getting married and we both want children very much and my sister in law said, "Do it soon because you won't be able to later!" But I know we're not ready for kids at this moment! Please, if anyone has been in this situation, lend some advice! Thanks in advance!

Pregnancy is not a cure for Endometriosis, nor is it something that can be "prescribed" as a treatment for a disease. Surgery using the modality of excision can confer the best possible rates of long-term successful relief. Check out www.centerforendo.com for details on excision. Lupron injections and the other hormonal ilk like it are temporary relievers, at best, all of which carry significant side effects and no lasting relief.

While the cause of endometriosis is unknown we do know that it is an estrogen driven disease. And the body's natural anti-estrogen is progesterone.
When a woman falls pregnant, often endometriosis will disappear, only to return again after pregnancy. There is some very strong correlation between the two. This suggests that the sex hormones are involved and that high progesterone levels produced in pregnancy play an important part in controlling this disease.
That's why progesterone is recommended from days 8 to 26 (just before menstruation) or whenever your normal menstrual cycle ends, breaking from cream briefly to refresh receptor sites. This mimics a pseudo-pregnancy state, and facilitates healing.

Another option besides surgery is a shot. I think length of time you get the shots can vary, I had one a month for six months. It puts you into a temporary medically induced menopause and helps to subdue the endo. When I had mine done I started the shots in January and didn't get my period back until October or November (made for a nice summer!!). It made a huge difference in my pain levels for quite a few years. Talk to your doctor about all of your options, not just the surgery. (I was in a drug comparison study so I don't know what medicine they gave me but I believe that Lupron is one of the ones used for this treatment)
As far as the fertility issue, I can't offer advice. I do have issues myself but there are other reasons besides the endo. But I would have some sort of treatment because it can cause infertilty in the long run.

I have heard from doctors as well as being a nurse myself that getting pregnant will sometimes get rid of the endometriosis. yu dont have to do that if you are not ready, you can always have the surgery, but with that it can always come back.
