It is rude. It is a way of saying I don't care. Get rid of these people from your life, but if you can, let them know about the effects of this word -- it is hurtful! You are smart and sensitive and you deserve kinder, nice friends! Best wishes, Isabella

I was going to cleverley use the lyrics of the Oasis song below to justify the power of "Whatever" - like a modern day cest la vie - two fingers up at the world....

However, they are terrible!! I think I agree with you

********************************************
I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want

I'm free to say whatever I
Whatever I like
If it's wrong or right it's alright

Always seems to me
You only see what people want you to see
How long's it gonna be
Before we get on the bus
And cause no fuss
Get a grip on yourself
It dont cost much

You're free to be wherever you
Wherever you please
You can shoot the breeze if you want

Here in my mind
You know you might find
Something that you
You thought you once knew
But now it's all gone
And you know it's no fun
Yeah I know it's no fun
Oh I know it's no fun

I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want

Whatever you do
Whatever you say
Yeah I know it's alright

Whatever you do
Whatever you say
Yeah I know it's alright

I use 'whatever' when I just do not feel like fighting with someone. I do not intend to it to mean 'F*** you'. Though I did have a friend say that she feels that way when I say it to her. At any rate, I sometimes get tired of fighting, so rather than do that, I just "give in" and say whatever, and that is that.

Depends entirely on the context (including tone of voice, body language, etc.). Sometimes it simply means, "it really doesn't matter to me either way." Sometimes it means, "I don't feel like debating this any more." Sometimes it's a cheesy way to get out of something one starts and then one decides one doesn't want to support one's opinion. There are so many possible uses...

The best thing to do, if you're not sure of someone's meaning, is to check for understanding (ask questions) before you react.

Why? Because they lack the ability to express themselves in a logical and meaningful way. You can also view it as a lack of maturity. Some people may mean what you suggest, but the vast majority are probably just lacking in the expressive language department.

Your over thinking it. I use "whatever" ALL THE TIME and it's just something to say when you refuse to continue a conversation with another person, especially when you're in disagreement. At least that's the way I use it... whatever...

I love saying this word. I use it when I'm not in the mood for discussion or when I want to avoid speaking.

It does mean that, the way it's used nowadays. It's a short way of saying, "I dont' care what you are saying".
