1930's house the windows need replacing they have stain glass i wuold like to keep stain glass and try to double glaze the lower windows and try to use wooden frames to keep the character of the house

This is possible. I'd contact a local home remodeler. Putting replacement windows in old houses is pretty easy. Leaving the stain glass in the top might add a little work if there is no cross member on to of the existing window, but it can be done. I'm not sure how much the double pane will help heat loss wise with the single pane glass above it. They make aluminum clad, wooden inside windows, I like Harvey windows but there are lots of good ones.

good luck with the changes, but I can't help but groan in agony at the loss of the stained glass section.
I feel like saying your cruel, a monster what a thing todo to stained glass windows. Yet is it possible there is a market for these kinds of windows, and that way you will find a good home for them also get some money form the sale of.
