The natural active ingredient is a plant hormone which stimulates root growth in cuttings for propagation.
A popular rooting powder 'Clonex' contains something called Indole-3-Butryic Acid. 'Miracle Gro' contains 3-Indolebutyric acid which sounds the same!
Organic growers use seaweed as a rooting hormone and also suggest vitamin B-1 as a 'hormone-like' rooting aid.

You can get the stuff at a home depot, its usually about 5 bucks and comes in a white powder form, and simply follow the instrucktions on the container for ruting your plants. Also it may not say this on the container but you want to give your plants LOTS of lights wen ruting them just like if you were growing from seeds and sprouting.

There are several hormones that work...including gibrellic acid...but you can make a fairly effective one by using willow twigs....soak the twigs over night in water....I usually then allow it to evaporate to about 50% of original volume....dip or soak cut ends of plants (if soaking...about 15 minutes is fine). A commercial product called 'Rootone' is available at many greenhouses and stores that carry plant supplies.

Science can only explain so much. Isn't it amazing that a simple root can split boulders? Now that is mental power!
