Parfocal
It's a type of lens, since you are speaking in reference to science, I would assume it's a type of microscope lens that stays in focus when the magnification is changed.
Meaning, regardless of how much you 'zoom' it does not get out of focus.

A parfocal lens is a microscope or camera lens that stays approximately in focus when the magnification is changed. For example, if the focal point of a microscope is changed from a low power objective(10x) to a higher power (40x or 43x), the object stays in focus. Similarly, in professional cameras, the object remains in focus as the zoom changes.

I've been out of school and science for quite some time, but this device holds true with photography too. The parfocal lens keeps an object in focus whether you zoom in 100x or pull back 2x.. Hope that helps you.
