For quantum mechanics, I suggest the Feynman lectures on physics.

For general relativity, Steven Weinberg's "Gravitation and Cosmology".

A good, college level physics textbook should be a good start.

Forget Hawking. He's difficult to understand and a bore to read. Try any of several books by Brian Greene. MUCH easier to understand him
