bought an ATA seagate harddrive. slapped in a housing to convert it from internal to an external USB mass storage device. My laptop sees the device but gives it no drive letter, can't format it, nothing. Just want a little extra storage and the worst part is I'm going to school for this sh**.

You need to go to start>run type dskmgmt.msc and hit OK. Once this opens.. you should see your external drive. When you see it.... you need to right click it and enable it... then set a drive letter for it like... J (something not used on your computer).... then you should be good to go ;) You probably have to format it and partition it as well... but that is pretty self explanitory once you are in the disk management utility.

If you have an Internal hard drive and you want to convert it to an External drive, take it to a professional. Problem might be that it already was used an an internal drive when it was made, (to test it out to make sure it works) and now you are reusin the resources of the disk as an external drive, It will probably not work considering your switching methods to which it was connected originally. IDE/ATA/SATA to USB/Firewire...probably have a dead disk now.

You need to create a partition first before you format it. Just go into Disk Management (Right click My Computer then Manage)...there you can create partitions and format.
