You'll notice that most of the people who list a whole line of potential disasters that can result from having it done, have never had it themselves.
Advantages...that's an abstract one. There aren't any advantages to wearing earrings or fingernail polish...it's an accessory. Like the others, it's an unnecessary embellishment. However, what would fashion be if we threw away all the things not necessary for our survival. Poor Manolo would be destitute.
Yes, it hurts, a little and not for long. The soreness while it heals is more annoying. What's important is to be diligent in taking care of it and following the piercer's instructions how. Properly cared for, it will affect speech maybe a day or two, if that. Swelling is a factor of how well you care for it. Keep the irritations to a minimum and rinse well between meals, and you'll be fine. You will NOT lose your tongue, you NOT lose taste buds, you will NOT bleed to death.
Disadvantages...not really, as long as you keep a perspective that there are potential hazards. Yes, you can accidentally bite down on the balls and chip a tooth...replace them with acrylic balls and that's solved. If they're clear, it also solves the visibility problem if your work may have problems with it.
Most importantly, NEVER EVER listen to a story that starts with "I heard that..."

There arent really any advantages, unless you give bj's then there is one for the guy. I say it didnt hurt. I had no pain what so ever. Make sure you know the person that is doing it. Make sure that you are going to a professional to have it done. Swelling can be taken care of by ice or cool water to help. The only disadvantage I have found is that you will come to learn you forget you have it and bite down on it now and again. I like mine. I dont take mine out. As for the trashy ppl comment, Sorry, im not trashy, far from it. I just like my tongue peircing. As far as the comment above bout not getting jobs because of it. She is right, you will have troubles with some jobs, but that is easily solved. They sell clear tongue rings for ppl who cant wear normal ones at work. They work wonders and no one can tell that you have one unless they are looking VERY closly. I wear a clear one at work every day. Never had any problems, my boss even thinks I take it out for work. Good luck!
P.S. Dont eat or drink anything with yeast in it, beer, bread, etc... It will cause it to swell more. And make sure after every meal, ciggarette, soda, that you rinse with 50% mouthwash mixed with water. It will help you keep from getting infected, and not eating yeast will keep it from swelling so bad.

I had my tongue pieced six years ago, I can still get a barbell through, but I rarely wear it. There really are no advantages except your partner may like it. The cons definitely out weigh the pros on this one. When I wore my barbell all the time I chipped two teeth. So unless you want to look back woods toothless, I would say find something else to pierce.

No advantages whatever and it does hurt. cold packs on it will help swelling. disadvantages are that it can get very badly infected, you can lose your tongue as you know it if you are not very careful, harder to get a job if you have one of those, looked down on, etc.

I won't lie, it DOES hurt. swelling can be helped by keeping ice or cool water on hand and applying it. I don't wear mine anymore, because it's out of style, and I see too many trashy people doing it, it has lost it's appeal to me. If you do go to get it done, make sure your piercer has a good reputation, takes precautionary sterility measures, and you might want to talk to people s/he has pierced. Take care!

Tongue piercing can result in infection, as others have said, and also damage to your teeth (resulting in higher dental bills). It complicates eating.
It's also out of style. Should have done it five years ago. Won't make you look cool today.
