Empathy means that you can feel for someone. For example if you told me your dog got ran over. I would feel bad for you and I could feel empathy for you. Hope this helps!

empathy is when you have an understanding of what someone is feeling or been through and because you have been through a simular situation or the same situation as they have you will have empathy it is not just understand or feeling it is having actual experienced what they have too.
For example if you have a friend who is going through a divorce you can understand and be supportive but empathy is when you have experienced that same thing and fully understand what they are gong through.
That is my belief on empathy

sympathy is where you stand back and feel sorry for someone. Perhaps you never owned any pets but feel sympathy for someone whose dog died.

Empathy is more of a hands-on / getting stuck in approach. Often becasue you have had a similar bad experience. For example you have empathy with someone whose dog has died because it happend to you as well and you remeber how it felt.
