In a nutshell, conservatives believe in a single minded, focused solution through control and management. This logic works well in matters of business, the economy, and the military. These are areas in which control bodes well. When applied to society, however, control becomes oppression.
Liberals believe in open minded, multi- faceted rule. This approach works well in a social services, education, and foreign policy when different solutions are required. A liberal approach to business or the economy would be chaos.
For this reason, most Americans fall somewhere in the middle, which is called moderate. This allows for limited control in areas that need focused direction and flexibility to adapt in areas that require thinking outside the box.

We're talking about people, so it's never cut-and-dry. Liberals for the most part are for social equality and programs to help the less fortunate, diplomacy, and less military spending. Conservatives tend to be for more military spending, more social controls (no gay marriage, no abortion, for instance), and a more "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" ideology. Liberals don't necessarily want a big government, but more a government that works for the people. Conservatives tend to prefer a smaller government, except they like stricter laws, again for things like sexual acts or forms of protesting (the anti-sodomy laws were conservative, as the flag burning ammendment would be).

Once upon a time, conservatives were considered fiscally responsible, while liberals were supposed to be big-spenders. Considering that this administration has given us the largest budget deficit ever, and the last administration (a Democratic one) gave us a huge surplus, that urban legend should be debunked by now.

Also, finally, conservatives tend to like helping corporations and the rich, subscribing to the "trickle down" theory of economics (which has been shown not to work, actually), while liberals prefer the government keeping an eye on big business.

You can be a conservative Democrat or a liberal Republican, but... well.... That would be hard. There are plenty of moderates, however, in both parties, who believe in, say, making abortion illegal except for rape, incest, or health of mother, but also support social programs, or who are pro-choice but also want the government to butt out of business. It really just depends on the person and what they're comfortable with.

Conservative and liberal is based mainly on social issues. Conservatives like conventions and traditional values while liberals prefer change and for the country to take a new direction. Democrat and republican focus on roles and responsabilities of governement in our everyday lives. Today it seems most liberals are in the democrat party and most conservatives are in the republican, but you can have conservative democrats and liberal republican.

No! It is not the same! There are some conservative Democrats such as Zell Miller, Jimmy Carter, and others that while Democrats, cling to basic conservative values like pro-life, a belief that seperation of church and state is not the same as prohibiting religion, and against gay marriage. You can certainly be a democrat and still be conservative!

The definition is in constant flux.

Since Americans don't speak English, any word grouping can have any imaginable meaning at any given time.

It will be so much nicer when the world is filled with Spanish Speaking Chinese people.

A liberal is a guy who has extramarital sex with a female aide while in office. A conservating is a guy who has gay sex with underage pages while in office. They both try to cover up their misdeeds. Their enemies both try to use their misdeeds against them during election season.

This is what liberals stand for. I will not comment on conservatives. From Wikipedia: Liberalism is an ideology, philosophical view, and political tradition which holds that liberty is the primary political value.[1] Liberalism has its roots in the Western Enlightenment, but the term now encompasses a diversity of political thought.

Broadly speaking, contemporary liberalism emphasizes individual rights. It seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, especially of government and religion, the rule of law, free public education, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports relatively free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of all citizens are protected. [2] In modern society, liberals favor a liberal democracy with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law and an equal opportunity to succeed[3].

Many modern liberals advocate a greater degree of government interference in the free market, often in the form of anti-discrimination laws, civil service examinations, universal education, and progressive taxation. This philosophy frequently extends to a belief that the government should provide for a degree of general welfare, including benefits for the unemployed, housing for the homeless, and medical care for the sick. Such publicly-funded initiatives and interferences in the market are rejected by modern advocates of classical liberalism, which emphasizes free private enterprise, individual property rights and freedom of contract; classical liberals hold that economic inequality, as arising naturally from competition in the free market, does not justify the violation of private property rights. However, modern advocates of classical liberalism do advocate a heavier taxation on the corporation, as opposed to the current trend of the burden of income tax resting on the shoulders of the individual worker, as did the early classical liberals.

Liberalism rejected many foundational assumptions which dominated most earlier theories of government, such as the Divine Right of Kings, hereditary status, and established religion. Fundamental human rights that all liberals support include the right to life, liberty, and property. Liberalism has its roots in the Western Enlightenment, but the term now encompasses a diversity of political thought, with adherents spanning a large part of the political spectrum.

A broader use of the term liberalism is in the context of liberal democracy (see also constitutionalism). In this sense of the word, it refers to a democracy in which the powers of government are limited and the rights of citizens are legally defined; this applies to nearly all Western democracies, and therefore is not solely associated with liberal parties.
