Tar and bug type removers do not work for sap because it is made to remove OIL based blemishes on the car.

Tree sap is mostly water and "sugar" - what I would suggest is
1.) a soft terry (type) cloth or a natural sponge.
2.) a 1 to 3 Gallon bucket; mix warm (as warm as you can take it) water with DAWN (or another type of heavy grease fighting dish washing liquid soap) - in a HEAVY or STRONG mix (about 10 times what you would -normally- use for dishes).
3.) Wet the area, and keep it moist (do not let the soap dry at all, even on the runoff or you will have more problems).
4.) Lots of elbow grease (rubbing) with the soapy sponge or rag - DO NOT USE A BRUSH or any other "Course" type thing.
5.) Because of "that much soap" be SURE and rinse the car well (get all the edges).

Tree sap is mostly sugar based / think of Maple Syrup - it takes a lot of water and rubbing to break down the sugar in it after it has dried (and Yes, it is not "Sugar" but that is the easiest way to explain it).

The link below is a PRO product to remove tree sap - be SURE and read it all, and follow EVERY precaution and instruction IF you decide to use it !!!

May I also mention that keeping your car waxed with a GOOD wax (not a spray and walk away, or car wash type wax) will help keep sap, bugs, and such from sticking to your car.

(Note: I would not use WD40, CLR, Simple Green or other types of products on your paint - the WD40 is made to leave oils behind, and the other chemicals are NOT made for what you need done and you could very well damage things using them.)

******
I forgot - after you do this you NEED to HAND WAX the car with GOOD wax that much rubbing and other things will remove the wax that is already there and make it worse next time!

Hold an ice cube for several minutes on the sap, until it's frozen. Then immediately peel the sap off.
