Now i'm not talking about some big time thing here, just how to get by simple passwords on desk top computers, just how does one start to do something like that? My knowledge is ok about computers, but i'm sure that its more complicated that just Control, Alt, del!

From what it sounds like, you would have a long way to go. If you want to hack just to look cool, then give it up because it's not going to happen. But if you want to get sneaky and steal friends passwords using a keylogger, search for a program called "perfect keylogger". It logs all the keystrokes on the computer the program is installed on.

Windows XP allows you to link to other computers if you both agree and sometimes if you don't then there are password cracking software available and once linked in you can run that on the other computer. But most passwords are exactly what people are told not to use, so if it is your mother, it may be her birthday, your father's name, your date of birth, etc. Knowing the person most times lets you in just like on TV. Go to tucows and download and look around, there may be free software out there.

There's always restarting in safe mode. My cousin did it once to get into his roomates computer. You can bypass the login screens and edit Preferences and such with administrative rights. :)

you can use software if you have physical access to the computer such as Cain & Abel other software allows you to dump the PW file onto a floopy and with another computer you can decyrpt it.
