Yes and never think about them, if you felt that they pops up in your brain and having goosebumps after then you have an unwanted companion with you.

My personal belief is that there is no such thing as a ghost..."absent from the body, present with the Lord." What you may see could be demons who took on the form of someone familiar to you, angels delivering a message, or a vision of some sort.
These things have to be invited, purposely, or by lack of concern for your actions. If you go to fortune tellers, play Oijia, read tarot cards...these are all doors that can open a passage for evil into your life.
Just reading stories about these occurances doesn't make you any more prone to experiencing them than looking at a picture of spaghetti will make you feel full. It can make you hungry though, so just watch your reactions to the stories.

I love all of that stuff on TV about ghosts and spirits. And, interestingly enough I believe in them too, but having watched all the TV shows, movies, etc. I still have never seen or felt one. I just think some folk are more tuned in than others. But, maybe there is some truth to the idea that if you show interest in things like this that you are inviting things to happen to you.

It can be as you describe. Not so much that you will encounter spirits because you read about them. More like you will notice things that you can atribute to ghosts and spirits, because you will be looking more for such signs.
This a similar phenomenon to noticing a particular car model, AFTER you purchase one, or become more serious about purchasing one.
For example, when my roof looked like it might need replacing, I became much more aware of other people's roofs. I began to notice colors, materials, and the features of roofs that I never noticed before. Same thing happened when whe began thinking about installing a fence. Suddenly, I saw details about fences I was never aware of.
Right after we bought my wife's Thunderbird, we began seeing them all over the road! Before, we had considered it a fairly uncommon automobile.
The study of ghosts doesn't attract them. It just makes you think of them a lot more. I will NOT get into a discussion about whether or not they exist.

I think the more open and accepting to the idea of spirits the more you will "encounter" them.
Different people react different ways. I don't believe spirits want to scare you which is why people who are fearful or uneasy about the idea are least likely to see or feel a presence.
It can also run in families. My Uncle and my Daughter both see people who have passed or are going to pass. My daughter had a full conversation with her Father, about why he died and where he went to after he died, 3 days before he really did died (He was living in Oklahoma at the time and they hadn't talked in a year. Being that she was only 3 at the time I don't believe it was something she made up. It was the exact way he died- which creeped me out).

You are on the correct track. The more you study about a subject the more your senses are receptive to the information around you. Are there ghosts? Are they really ghosts? I have had experiences with the unknown. I can tell you this they are real and some should not be messed with. Walk this path very careful as it can lead to things you will not want. Go on the web and read Robins story.

Your mind make you susceptible to a lot of things. So if your researching about ghosts then your more attune to this phenomenon and will be able to see or hear things to enforce these thoughts. How ever if you are a non believer and can dissuade your mind from believing then you'll never see or hear any spiritual occurrences since they can all be explained away in your own mind. You only need a brief belief for the bad things to happen to you. It requires a much stronger belief to manipulate.

IMO - if you are psychically receptive you will eventually begin to notice things you would not normally have given a 2nd thought to. I think reading, watching tv, ect does give a certain influence, but if you read tarot or open yourself up psychically you need to have boundries and pray for protection and to only allow positive energy. also remember to close off when you are done. psychic experiences come in all kinds of ways, but it will only happen if you are ready for it.
I had some fears/concerns about this in the past. a book i really found helpful was psychic living. The advice in how to open up yet protect yourself was very good, a how to if you will.

I read a ton of stuff about psychic awareness because I personally find it interesting, but I've never seen a ghost or spirit or anything.. lol
However, if your as bold and strange as I am here's a fun rainy day activity
First go to a bookstore and sit reading in the metaphysical section. Then when you're sure people are watching, stand up and grab the book, pretending to read out of it, chant stuff like "ogga modiay skjow wehaaawyak!" and dance around and stand on chairs and stuff... It's gotten me thrown out before, but I swear it's really fun!!!

I know of people who believe that to be true. I believe it has to do with open mindedness. I was told by a friend who claimed he could see such things (and believe it or not, I believed him because he told me things about my past that no one could have known but the "spirit" he claimed told him) that they will show themselves to you if they feel you can handle it. I'm not talking about the scary ones, I'm talking about the past loved ones that you've lost etc... Of course they care about you and don't want to spook you unless they feel you need to know something.
As for the bad ones, I don't think they have a code of honor they have to abide by.
One thing I do find odd, is that a lot of people who say they have these "gifts" all have different stories to tell, they say different things. So I don't know what to believe.
